Con Dao
Côn Đảo
Con Dao is Vietnam's most compelling island destination, a place where extraordinary natural beauty coexists with a deeply moving human history. This archipelago of 16 islands lies 185 kilometers off the southern coast, far enough from the mainland to have remained one of the best-preserved marine environments in Southeast Asia. Con Son, the main island, is dominated by dense tropical forest that is home to the endemic black giant squirrel and numerous bird species. The surrounding waters are part of Con Dao National Park, protecting coral reefs, seagrass meadows, dugongs, and critically important sea turtle nesting beaches - between June and September, endangered green and hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay eggs on several of the archipelago's beaches. Contrasting with this natural paradise is Con Dao's brutal history as a prison archipelago, used by the French colonial administration from 1862 and later by the South Vietnamese government through 1975. The infamous 'tiger cages' and other prison facilities are now preserved as a museum and memorial. This unusual combination of ecological significance and historical gravity gives Con Dao a depth that few tropical islands can match.
Hoe Te Bereiken
Per Vliegtuig
Con Dao Airport (VCS) on Con Son island receives flights from Ho Chi Minh City (45 minutes, 3-5 daily on Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways) and occasional services from Hanoi and Can Tho. The airport is small and flights fill quickly in peak season - book well in advance. VASCO (Vietnam Air Services Company) operates most routes using ATR 72 turboprops.
Per Veerboot
High-speed ferries operate from Vung Tau (3.5 hours, Con Dao Express) and from Soc Trang's Tran De port (2.5 hours, Superdong). Ferry services are weather-dependent and may be cancelled during rough sea conditions from June to September. The Vung Tau route is more frequent and reliable.
Beste Reistijd
Calm seas, excellent visibility for diving and snorkeling, and warm but not oppressive temperatures. March-April offers the best underwater visibility. June marks the beginning of turtle nesting season, combining good weather with wildlife encounters.
Vermijd: September to November: the roughest seas and heaviest rainfall. Some ferry services are suspended, diving is impossible on many days, and outer island trips may be cancelled. However, this is peak turtle nesting season (June-September) for those willing to accept the weather trade-off.
