Cat Ba
Cát BÃ
Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 367 islands in Cat Ba Archipelago, sitting at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam. At 285 square kilometers, it offers a grittier, more adventurous alternative to the standard Ha Long Bay cruise experience. Nearly half the island is covered by Cat Ba National Park, a rugged landscape of limestone karst peaks, tropical forest, freshwater lakes, and mangrove wetlands that shelters the critically endangered Cat Ba langur - one of the world's rarest primates with fewer than 80 individuals remaining. Cat Ba town, the island's main settlement, is a compact waterfront strip of hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies that serves as the launching point for boat trips into Lan Ha Bay, the stunning and less-visited body of water that surrounds the island's eastern coast. Rock climbing has become a major draw, with hundreds of bolted routes on the limestone cliffs overlooking the bay. For budget travelers, Cat Ba offers the most affordable way to experience Ha Long Bay's limestone karst landscape without the premium pricing of Quang Ninh-based cruises.
