Overzicht

Hoi An was one of Southeast Asia's most important trading ports from the 15th to 19th centuries, where Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Dutch, and Portuguese merchants exchanged silk, spices, ceramics, and precious metals. When the Thu Bon River silted up and trade shifted to nearby Da Nang, Hoi An was effectively frozen in time, preserving an architectural tapestry found nowhere else in Vietnam. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ancient Town contains over 1,000 historic buildings: Chinese assembly halls, Japanese merchant houses, French colonial shopfronts, and Vietnamese tube houses, all remarkably intact. Today this small city of around 150,000 residents has become one of Vietnam's most beloved destinations, famous not just for its history but for its world-class tailoring shops (you can have custom clothing made in 24 hours), its exceptional food scene, its iconic lantern-lit evenings, and beautiful beaches just a short bicycle ride away.

Must-Do Ervaringen

De leukste dingen om te doen in Hoi An

1

Explore the Ancient Town at dusk with lanterns glowing

The magic of Hoi An peaks as the sun sets and hundreds of silk lanterns illuminate the narrow streets and riverside. Walk along Bach Dang Street beside the Thu Bon River, cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, and explore the Chinese assembly halls. Purchase an Old Town ticket (120,000 VND/$5) for entry to 5 heritage sites. The experience is even more spectacular during the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival (14th of the lunar month) when electric lights are switched off entirely.

2

Get custom clothing tailored

Hoi An is world-famous for its tailor shops, with over 400 operating in the Ancient Town alone. Quality varies enormously — reputable shops include Yaly Couture, A Dong Silk, and Bebe. Bring a photo or design of what you want, choose your fabric, get measured, and return for fittings within 24-48 hours. A custom suit costs from $100-300, a dress from $30-80, a shirt from $16-30. Allow at least two days for fittings and alterations.

3

Take a cooking class

Hoi An is one of the best places in Vietnam to learn traditional cooking. Top-rated classes include Morning Glory Cooking School, Red Bridge Cooking School (on a riverside campus outside town), and Tra Que Water Wheel. Most classes begin with a market tour to buy ingredients, then teach 3-5 dishes. Full classes run 3-4 hours and cost 650,000-1,000,000 VND ($26-40) including all food and drinks.

4

Cycle to An Bang Beach

The 4km ride from the Ancient Town to An Bang Beach along the flat Hai Ba Trung road is a quintessential Hoi An experience. Pass through rice paddies, local neighborhoods, and vegetable gardens. Spend the afternoon at a beach bar, swim in the South China Sea, and feast on fresh seafood before cycling back through the golden evening light.

5

Visit the Fujian Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien)

The grandest of Hoi An's Chinese assembly halls was built in 1690 by Fujian merchants as a place to gather, trade, and worship Thien Hau, the goddess of the sea. The elaborate triple gate, intricate wood carvings, and colorful mosaic decorations are among the finest examples of Chinese architecture in Vietnam. Adjacent assembly halls by Cantonese, Hainan, and Teochew Chinese communities are also worth visiting.

6

Release lanterns on the Thu Bon River

In the evening, vendors along the riverfront sell small floating candle lanterns that you can release onto the Thu Bon River. While touristy, the sight of hundreds of flickering lanterns drifting on the dark water is genuinely beautiful. Lanterns cost about 10,000-20,000 VND ($0.40-0.80). For a more immersive experience, hire one of the small round basket boats (thung chai) for a lantern-lit ride on the river.

7

Visit the Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham) for snorkeling

This marine protected area, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, lies 18km offshore and offers the best snorkeling and diving in the Hoi An area. Speed boats depart from Cua Dai Beach (20 minutes, about 400,000-500,000 VND roundtrip). The coral reefs are healthiest from June to September. The islands also have small beaches and a fishing village to explore.

The UNESCO-protected core of Hoi An is a pedestrian-friendly area of narrow streets lined with centuries-old buildings. The Japanese Covered Bridge (Cau Nhat Ban, built in the 1590s), Chinese assembly halls, and merchant houses are all accessible with a single Old Town ticket. After dark, the entire area transforms as hundreds of silk lanterns illuminate the streets and the Thu Bon River, creating an enchanting atmosphere that peaks during the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival.

Several excellent beachfront restaurants like Soul Kitchen and The DeckHouse serve meals with ocean views.

Cam Nam Island

A short walk across the Cam Nam Bridge from the Ancient Town, this quiet island offers a more local experience. Narrow lanes wind past small houses, gardens, and humble food stalls serving Hoi An's famous local specialties at lower prices than in the Old Town. The riverfront promenade offers lovely views back toward the Ancient Town, especially at sunset.

This 300-year-old farming village just north of the Ancient Town grows herbs and vegetables using traditional methods and seaweed fertilizer from the nearby De Vong River. A shared shuttle bus runs from the airport for around 120,000 VND ($5) per person.

Regular public buses (route 1, yellow bus) connect Da Nang to Hoi An every 20 minutes for 30,000 VND ($1.20), taking about 1 hour. Tourist shuttle buses from Hue (3-4 hours, approximately 200,000-350,000 VND) are also widely available. Open-tour buses on the Hanoi-HCMC route typically stop in Hoi An.

Veiligheid

Hoi An is one of the safest destinations in Vietnam. The town is small, friendly, and well-policed. The main concerns are aggressive touts outside tailor shops and restaurants (a polite but firm 'no thank you' works), occasional bicycle theft (use provided locks), and flooding during October-November when the Ancient Town can flood rapidly. If visiting during wet season, check weather forecasts and be prepared to move to higher ground if heavy rain is forecast. When swimming at the beach, pay attention to flag warnings — currents can be dangerous during the wet season.

Lokale Tips

Insider advies voor een bezoek aan Hoi An

  • 1The best tailor shops won't have touts outside pulling you in — research reputable shops online before arriving and avoid any shop that uses aggressive street solicitation.
  • 2Visit the Ancient Town early in the morning (7-9am) before tour groups arrive and before the vehicle restriction hours, when the streets are at their most atmospheric and authentic.
  • 3The Full Moon Lantern Festival (14th of each lunar month) transforms the town when electric lights are turned off — plan your visit to coincide if possible, but be prepared for larger crowds.
  • 4For the best Cao Lau, try the stalls inside the central market rather than tourist restaurants — the market vendors often have the most authentic version for about 30,000 VND.
  • 5An Bang Beach is far superior to the closer Cua Dai Beach, which has suffered severe erosion. The extra 5 minutes of cycling is worth it.
  • 6If ordering custom clothing, always schedule at least one fitting session and don't be afraid to ask for adjustments — good tailors expect this and will happily make changes.
  • 7Rent a bicycle and spend a morning exploring the countryside around Tra Que Village and Cam Thanh — the flat terrain, rice paddies, and water coconut groves offer a peaceful contrast to the bustling Ancient Town.
